Smart Crosswalk Safety Enhancement System
Smart Pedestrian Crossing Solution for Signalized Intersections
Many intersections, particularly on arterial roads, suburban streets, and provincial highways, lack traffic signals to maintain vehicle flow. At night, reduced traffic can lead to higher vehicle speeds. Combined with poor lighting, driver fatigue, and pedestrian distraction (e.g., "phone zombies"), these un-signalized crosswalks become high-risk areas. Key challenges include insufficient safe stopping distance, low visibility in bad weather, and inattentive pedestrians.
Infrared pedestrian red-light violation detection devices are installed at the waiting areas on both ends of the crosswalk. When the pedestrian signal is red, these devices detect anyone entering the crosswalk and broadcast a voice message: "It's red now, please wait." This system informs waiting pedestrians of the signal status and effectively deters unintentional violations, encouraging safe and civilized crossing habits.
A. Pedestrian Crossing Voice Alert System (Infrared Voice Prompt Poles + In-ground Traffic Lights)
B. Vehicle Yielding System (Pedestrian Signal Detection Equipment + Smart Pavement Lights/Stakes)
This system synchronizes with the integrated traffic signals. When the pedestrian signal is green, LED pavement lights/stakes automatically illuminate. When the pedestrian signal is red, these lights turn off or display red. Upon detecting a green pedestrian signal, the control circuit triggers the ground-level lighting devices to flash at a high frequency (customizable to steady light or other effects), alerting drivers to slow down or stop for crossing pedestrians, thereby achieving the goal of vehicles yielding to pedestrians safely.
C. Traffic Signal Control System (Integrated Traffic Light Pole + LED Light Strips)
This central system coordinates the Pedestrian Crossing Voice Alert System and the Vehicle Yielding System. It detects communication signals and controls the operational modes of the integrated traffic lights and the smart crosswalk. Pedestrian signals are embedded within the streamlined pole, offering an aesthetically pleasing design and flexible module configuration. Additional functionalities like red-light violation monitoring with facial recognition, voice alerts, text displays, and side light strip indicators can be incorporated to ensure orderly compliance from both vehicles and pedestrians. Notably, eye-catching LED light strips are installed on the horizontal and vertical arms of the pole, synchronizing with the traffic signals. These highly visible strips, distinguishable from up to 300 meters away day or night, effectively prevent accidental signal violations due to visual obstructions.

Our Solution
This solution employs a synchronized system combining three subsystems to enhance safety and efficiency for both pedestrians and drivers at signalized intersections, guided by the principle of rational traffic distribution and minimizing interference.
Proactive Pedestrian Safety: A Smart Crosswalk Solution for Un-Signalized Intersections
Many roads currently lack and are unsuitable for traffic signal installations at crosswalks to ensure vehicular flow efficiency. At night, reduced traffic and pedestrian volume lead to significantly increased vehicle speeds. Coupled with insufficient visibility, physical fatigue, and lowered alertness, pedestrians crossing at these un-signalized crosswalks face heightened risks of accidents. Key challenges include:
Insufficient safe stopping distance for fast-approaching vehicles.
Safety hazards at poorly lit intersections, particularly during adverse weather conditions with low visibility.
Alerting pedestrians, especially those distracted by mobile devices ("phubbers"), to enhance street-crossing awareness.
Installed at both ends of the crosswalk, this device projects red laser beams onto pedestrians' lower legs as they step onto the crosswalk, forming a distinct red light band. This provides drivers with clear visual warnings from a distance, even in low-light conditions, when driver attention is low, or when visibility is affected by factors such as opposing headlights or inclement weather. The red beams also alert pedestrians, reminding those focused on their phones to pay attention while crossing, thereby reducing potential accidents.
A. Smart Crosswalk Alert Beacon with Laser Grid Projection
B. Smart Crosswalk Alert Beacon with Floodlight Projection
Also installed at both ends of the crosswalk, this version uses yellow floodlights to cast a bright yellow zone projection on pedestrians' lower legs as they enter the crosswalk. The highly visible yellow alert allows drivers to detect pedestrian movement from afar under poor lighting or low-attention scenarios, prompting timely reactions. Simultaneously, the yellow light captures pedestrians' attention, effectively warning distracted individuals and enhancing crossing safety.
Our Solution
The system is specifically developed for un-signalized crosswalks or those with nighttime flashing yellow signals. It offers two front-end alert device options:
System Features
We introduce the Non-Signalized Crosswalk Smart Pedestrian Crossing System, designed to address nighttime safety issues at un-signalized crosswalks on urban branch/trunk roads, multi-lane roads with safety islands, suburban streets, and provincial/highway intersections. This solution balances vehicular passage efficiency and pedestrian safety at crosswalks without traffic lights, targeting a critical gap in urban road safety. Effective under various weather, road, and lighting conditions, the system significantly improves driver awareness of pedestrians from over 100 meters away, with beam effects becoming particularly pronounced in rain, snow, fog, or haze when driver sight is compromised.
The back-end platform employs a B/S architecture, eliminating the need for additional client software. It enables centralized remote management and distributed administration via standard web browsers.
